About
Homebirth Victoria

Empowering Families Through Homebirth

Homebirth Victoria (previously Homebirth Victoria Network) is a community-driven group that serves as a valuable resource for those interested in homebirth, planning a homebirth, or seeking connections with fellow homebirthing families.

Additionally, we play a crucial role as a consumer group in advocating for homebirth access.

The website aims to provide information, resources, and a directory of midwives, offering useful features for the community.

Our Commitment

Homebirth Victoria is a community group that is for women, families and birth workers. We are guided by the concerns within our community and are led by volunteers who are within this community. Our aim is to use our collective voice to raise awareness of and reduce barriers to homebirth. We support women and their families to birth where they themselves feel safe, and we recognise that most people in Australia have stigmatised views of homebirth, or don’t even know it is a safe and legal birth choice.

Broadly, it our aim to improve access to homebirth by improving community understanding, including GP’s understanding, improving knowledge of what is available, and contributing to broader efforts to promote positive change within the birth culture of Australia.

For the purpose of our advocacy we define homebirth as a birth at home with the intended presence of two registered midwives, and freebirth as a birth at home without medical professional for the purpose of assistance. These definitions may vary within the broader homebirth community and we respect this.

Inclusivity

We exist primarily to provide information and support for any human that is wanting to birth at home.

Our advocacy is for homebirth overall.

The terminology used will be inline with the 'Woman-centred care: Strategic directions for Australian maternity services' document prepared under the auspices of the COAG Health Council.

You can view that document here.

"Woman or women: The person giving birth. The term is inclusive of the woman’s baby, partner and family. Under this definition the baby is not treated as a separate entity and its welfare is considered only so far as how it affects the mother."

If you do not identify as a woman or female, and prefer to be addressed as a birthing person, please know, that as long as you have a respectful interest in homebirth - you are welcome!
