Post partum planning after a homebirth

Updated: Jun 26

So, you've birthed your baby!

You're now relaxing in bed, soaking up the freshness of a newborn human.

(maybe) The first questions:

  • Showering

  • Food

The post birth shower...can anything prepare.

Make sure you have something comfy to change in to after that shower

  • Pads/adult nappies

    • Did you know you can bleed for a number of weeks after giving birth?

  • Comfy undies

  • After birth pains - more common after 2nd or more babies...but OUCH! How will you support yourself through this?

  • Open shirt/dressing gown if planning to breastfeed

  • Warm socks!

You probably already have had a snack by now...but what about your first proper meal?

Some questions to ask yourself when planning for a post partum:

  • Who is cooking?

  • Have you prepped food?

    • What about actually nutritious food

      • Unless you happen to live here amazing food places...and Uber Eats giftcard is NOT a good choice

  • Some Victorian businesses that provide nourishing meals/food options include:

    • New Bubs Club

    • Dinner Ladies (Not Victorian, but I personally loved this)

    • Elan House of Wellness

    • The Postpartum Pantry

    • Emily the Doula

  • Who is on nappy duty? Do they know they are?

  • Have you bought nappies?! Have you pre-washed your nappies if using Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN)

  • Where will you spend most of the time?

  • Have you booked a 6 week postnatal womens health phsyio/pelvic floor check? (trust me...I worked in Aged Care for 3 years - you DO want to be doing this)

  • Do you have the details of a lactation consultant or can you access ABA (Australian Breastfeeding Association resources)

  • Sleep...is the sleep space set up?

    • Co-sleep

    • Bedsharing

      • If either of the above - THIS is a great Facebook group to join

    • Cot sleeping (not ideal in the early days if possible)

  • What's your policy on visitors?

I'm sure there are SOOO many other details when planning for postpartum. If there is something I'm missing that you'd love to add feel free to reach out!
